Excellent article. Very thorough and thoughtful analysis of the problem of protecting data.

I began using file encryption software last year after losing a flash drive containing some important documents. Lesson learned.

I tried TrueCrypt and many other programs, but found them too complicated for my everyday use. Finally, I found SensiGuard, which is by far the easiest encryption software around. No need to set up volumes or anything complicated. You just click any file or folder on your PC or flash drive and it's automatically encrypted. Well worth the 29 bucks. I use it every day.
